For a considerable length of time, a town on the southern tip of Chenega Island was home to the Chenega individuals. The word Chenega signifies "underneath the mountain". This territory, in Prince William Sound, was the center point of the early history of the Chenega individuals. The rich waters of Prince William Sound gave well to the general population, and furthermore brought numerous changes. In the 1700's, Russian trappers and voyagers found their way into Prince William Sound, to the Village of Chenega. It was they who originally presented their Orthodox Christian religious practices which were in the long run embraced by the Chenega individuals.

On Good Friday, March 27th 1964, the island Village of Chenega was crushed by a wave made by a monstrous 9.2 greatness tremor. The death toll was disastrous. In this single occasion, hundreds of years of history were washed away. Twenty-three, of the Chenega individuals, more than 1/3 of them, lost their lives that day. With the town gone, the Chenega individuals were moved to Tatitlek, Cordova and Anchorage. Chenega endured the most elevated level of death toll of any network in the seismic tremor.
