In 1978, Ali Albwardy was asked by H.H. Shaikh Rashid to set up Al Jadaf as a maritime city inside Dubai Creek. At the same time Ali Albwardy formed Albwardy Marine Engineering LLC (AME) as the first company in Al Jadaf. In 2008, Kommer Damen and Ali Albwardy reached an agreement for Damen to buy a 49% stake in AME. Shortly thereafter the Board agreed to build Damen Shipyards Sharjah (DSS) in Hamriyah Free Zone. H.H. Dr. Sheikh Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah did the official inauguration of DSS in January 2014.
In 2018 we celebrated our 40th anniversary with our founder and even some of the original employees from the first years. We also opened our new Dubai Office and workshop in Dubai Maritime City.
Today we have a total workforce of around 1100 people of 26 different nationalities in our three UAE locations: Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah. These people are our biggest asset and we are proud that 15% of our staff has been with us for 25+ years.
With all key competences in-house, including an extensive engineering division, we repair and build vessels to the highest technical and environmental standards. We are certified by LRQA to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 as well as API Q1.
Our services include newbuilding of steel and aluminum vessels and repair and services of marine as well as O&G assets. We also offer offshore and afloat repair services to clients worldwide. Our diving division offers their services out of Fujairah including underwater hull cleaning. In response to customer requests we expanded into Oman where we offer ship repair services and diving services in Port of Sohar and Salalah.
We carry out 200+ drydockings per year from our 3 locations. Our afloat and voyage repair division carries out repair jobs from our extensive workshops, ranging from routine maintenance to complex steel renewals and conversions afloat. For our newbuilding projects we use state-of-the-art designs and production methods supplied and supported by the whole Damen Shipyards Group. We also serve as a repair and service station for Damen vessels operating in the region.
We aim to be the best and most efficient shipyard in the area with a high focus on safety.
